Scanner Wedge for BlackBerry Requirements

Scanner Wedge for BlackBerry and the Keystroke Injection setting on the hand held device

Scanner Wedge uses a feature on the BlackBerry called "Keystroke Injection", allowing applications and hardware devices to enter keystrokes (such as letters and numbers) directly into target applications such as e-mail and spreadsheets.
If your Microvision Scanner is paired to the Scanner Wedge Software properly, indicated by the scanner LED giving a single blink, yet the scanned data does not appear, Keystroke Injection may be set to “Deny”.

Follow these steps to set Keystroke Injection to allow:

Although many BlackBerry handhelds differ, most users can access this by starting at the BlackBerry desktop:

    1. Select Options

    2. Select Advanced Options

    3. Select Applications

    4. Scroll down to Scanner Wedge for BlackBerry. Select it, and select Edit Permissions.

    5. Expand Interactions

    6. Set Keystroke Injection to “Allow”.

    7. Open scanner Wedge and active your scanner. For details on how to do this, please refer to the Scanner Wedge for BlackBerry User Guide.

    8. Open up any application that accepts keystroke input and scan a bar code.In handheld software version 4.2 or newer the individual user should have access to set this interaction unless it has specifically been set to “Deny” by the BES administrator.

In earlier versions of handheld software, the Keystroke Injection setting is specifically restricted by the BES and the BES administrator will need to help activate and properly configure Scanner Wedge for BlackBerry. To enable use of Scanner Wedge for BlackBerry, on pre 4.2 handhelds your BES administrator must edit permissions for your device so that you, the BlackBerry user, can set Keystroke Injection from "Deny" to "Allow" for Scanner Wedge. Your BlackBerry handheld's BES administrator may vary depending on how you use your BlackBerry handheld.

  • If you use corporate email, contact your IT department.
  • If you use personal email, contact your wireless carrier (e.g. Cingular, Sprint, etc).
  • If you do not use email, contact your wireless carrier (e.g. Cingular, Sprint, etc).

Contact your BES administrator and provide them with the application note PDF document on right. Chances are, if you are contacting your wireless carrier, they will already know how to change this setting. However, you will need the document to learn how to change the Keystroke Injection setting to "Allow" on your device. Through simple, step-by-step instructions, the application note outlines:

  • How to change BES permissions for Scanner Wedge on your BlackBerry, then
  • How to set Keystroke Injection to "Allow" on your BlackBerry

The PDF is broken into three main steps — the BlackBerry user will perform the first task, the BES administrator will perform the second task (to change BES permissions), and the BlackBerry user will perform the third task. All of these steps should not take longer than 15-20 minutes, total. If you have any questions or comments, please contact product support at: (866) 333-3542 or email scannersupport@microvision.com
